For the past nineteen years Habitat for Humanity of Highlands County has worked diligently to build safe, decent, affordable housing a reality for over 130 families in Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid. These hard working families provide the much-needed services to our community. They are our hospital workers, our day care providers, our elder care professionals, government staff, and retail employees just to name a few. They often do not make enough to qualify for conventional mortgage financing or slightly too much for government subsidy programs. They toil in the shadows of our economy often under served and under appreciated until, of course they are no longer here. Through our ministry we have been able to break the vicious cycle of working class poverty, by enabling our families to successfully transition from renting to ownership. They are able to accumulate a little bit of wealth to send their children to college, be better prepared for that unforeseen medical emergency, have the necessary food on the table, and maybe even retire someday with a bit of dignity. They proudly pay their property taxes and participate in greater numbers in community activities.
Habitat for Humanity has a few unique opportunities, unsurpassed in our history, which would enable us to build over 300 homes in the next five years. With over 200 families and growing on our waiting list the time to start is now. With your support we can do this.
We have created this new website to enable you to keep track of our progress and learn more about our plans. You will meet our families and volunteers, and learn how to become one yourself. You will be able to donate, safely on-line and communicate with us on a wide variety of subjects.
We are hopeful you will join us in our mission in any way you can.
Thank you and God bless.
